Maintaining your new garage epoxy floor

Epoxy floors have always been known for their durability and longevity. Not to mention their versatility on where and how they can be applicated. Although durability is a huge selling point for epoxy floors there are some dos and donts when maintaining epoxy flooring. One of these dos is keeping your garage floor surface dirt and grit-free. This is especially relevant when moving your vehicle in and out of your garage. Dirt and grit can scratch your new epoxy floors if allowed to remain there without being cleaned. Overtime your vehicle can embed these things into the concrete causing many problems down the road.

When you use soap-based cleaning agents on an epoxy floor it tends to build a haze over the surface that can dull the appearance of your floor. Epoxy flooring is not designed to be cleaned by soap or harsh chemicals meaning the use of warm water and a soft-bristled brush is all you need to properly care for your new epoxy floor.

Stay on top of any dirty areas that may arise. A shop vac can prove useful in these situations. Then as you can you can clean the area with warm water and a soft brush. Since epoxy floors are highly water-resistant this makes it very easy to clean when liquid spills occur or if you’re just trying to remove dirt and grime with your garden hose.

The best way to approach a heavily soiled floor is to do a few things: sweep and vacuum carefully. Make sure you remove all items on the floor to ensure that you can fully clean every spot of the floor as efficiently as possible. Once you’ve ensured that all the dirt and grime build up is gone you can then continue the process by following up with a hard foam mop and warm water to completely rid of any remaining dirt and grime that may be left over. Following that procedure you can then follow up using a clear ammonia/water mix roughly 2-3 ounces of ammonia per gallon of water for a second round of mopping.

When it comes to fluid leaks that can cause damage if not attended too, for instance, rust, it needs to be scrubbed with a soft bristled nylon brush and warm/hot water. Some oils and fluids such as antifreeze, need to be wiped up with shop towels and paper towels. Even oil leaks from the motor could cause harm to you epoxy flooring if not cleaned over time. It’s very important that any gas that is spilled is cleaned up immediately. This is so important because it allowed to sit for a certain amount of time can cause damage to the surface of your new epoxy floor. Paint spills and other household cleaners as well as other abrasive liquids are also to be cleaned as quickly as possible

Stains need to be light scrubbed and can be taken care of by using a soft bristled brush and warm water. It’s very important that when undergoing a stain removal process that you avoid the use of wool or harsh chemicals such as comet. Do not ever use a harsh cleaning compound with citrus or acid in them. Citrus cleaners and vinegar ruin the epoxy compound and leave your new flooring system compromised and must be avoided at all times.
